The Kansas City Chiefs are reuniting with a familiar face, signing veteran running back Kareem Hunt to their practice squad.
The move comes after starting tailback Isiah Pacheco suffered a fractured fibula, which is expected to sideline him for six-to-eight weeks.
With Pacheco out, the Chiefs were left with a thin running back corps, featuring only Samaje Perine and undrafted rookie Carson Steele on the active roster.
To bolster their depth, the team has turned to Hunt, who began his career with the Chiefs in 2017.
As a rookie, Hunt led the NFL with 1,327 rushing yards and scored 11 scrimmage touchdowns, earning him a Pro Bowl selection.
After a promising start to his career, Hunt’s time in Kansas City was cut short when he was released in 2018 following a video surfacing of him pushing and kicking a woman in a hotel.
Hunt went on to spend five seasons with the Cleveland Browns, where he had some productive years, including a 2020 campaign in which he amassed 1,145 yards and 11 touchdowns from scrimmage.
Now, six years after his departure from Kansas City, Hunt is back with the Chiefs, joining the practice squad and potentially providing a boost to the team’s running game.
If Hunt can stay healthy and earn a spot on the active roster, his pass-catching ability could make him an interesting fit in Andy Reid’s offense.
