The Miami Dolphins are running out of time to make a move before the NFL trade deadline. Despite reports of Chris Grier working the phones, no deals have been made yet.
Miami has made it clear they don’t intend to be sellers at the deadline, but that might be a mistake.
The team believes they have the talent to turn the season around and make a run for the postseason, but do they have the coaching and depth to get there?
These are questions that will play out over the next nine weeks, but if the Dolphins are going to do anything, these last-minute moves might be smart.
Trade a Running Back
Miami doesn’t need Jeff Wilson riding the inactive list or Raheem Mostert fumbling the football.
What they do need is a draft pick in 2025, which they can get by trading a running back.
The Dolphins’ deepest position is running back, so they should use that to add to their coffers for 2025.
Perhaps they can even fill a hole or two next year with the extra draft pick.
Move Jevon Holland
Jevon Holland is good enough to get a big paycheck, but he won’t get the Dolphins a high-comp pick.
Miami has too many holes to fill to get a comp pick if they lose Holland in free agency next year.
They should explore options to move him now and acquire something for the future.
Holland will command a salary that should be too much for the Dolphins to meet, given his injury issues and lack of elite play.
Add Defensive Edge Help
Defensive edge help is imperative if Grier is going to help the Dolphins.
The team could have given up a sixth-round pick for Baron Browning, who was traded by the Denver Broncos on Monday.
Browning was lost on Denver’s depth chart but is productive off the edge and would have improved Miami’s defense.
The Dolphins need someone like Browning to bring to the team if they’re not going to send anyone out.
Defensive end is the most glaring hole on the Dolphins’ roster, followed by linebacker and secondary help.
Trading for a top-edge rusher makes no sense given their salary situation and cost, so a guy like Browning would be ideal.
