The Miami Hurricanes’ defense delivered a dominant performance against rival Florida State Seminoles on Saturday night, securing a 36-14 victory at Hard Rock Stadium.
This win marked a turning point for the Hurricanes, as they proved they could win without relying solely on quarterback Cam Ward’s impressive skills.
Ward, a Heisman Trophy candidate, had a season-low passing yards and no touchdown passes, but it didn’t matter – the defense had his back.
The Seminoles’ offense, ranked 132nd among 134 FBS teams in scoring offense and total offense, looked even more inept against Miami’s defense.
Florida State had not scored more than 21 points in a game this season and scored fewer than 20 points for the seventh time in eight games.
Miami’s defense held the Seminoles to a season-low 115 passing yards and nearly achieved a shutout, allowing only a late touchdown with 21 seconds remaining.
Coach Mario Cristobal praised his defense, saying they “played their tails off” and made it difficult for the Seminoles to run or pass.
The Hurricanes’ defense broke free from several holding calls and consistently applied pressure on the quarterback.
Miami’s defense also held the Seminoles to a season-low 149 yards over the first three quarters.
The Seminoles’ lone touchdown drive in the second quarter was aided by a 42-yard run by backup quarterback Luke Kromenhoek.
In the third quarter, Miami’s defense stopped Florida State on downs on three consecutive drives, sacking Kromenhoek twice.
FSU coach Mike Norvell acknowledged his team’s struggles on offense, citing poor third-down conversions and a lack of rhythm.
Miami’s defense came alive in the second half, with all four tackles for loss occurring in the final two quarters.
Senior Francisco Mauigoa led the Canes with seven tackles and praised his teammates for executing their jobs flawlessly.
For Akeem Mesidor, one of the players still on the team from Miami’s 55-3 loss to FSU in 2022, the victory was especially sweet.
