Panthers Coach Dave Canales: No Plans to Trade Bryce Young, Believes He Can Be Franchise QB
Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales has made it clear that the team has no intention of trading quarterback Bryce Young. Despite demoting Young to the backup role earlier this week, Canales emphasized that the team is happy with their quarterback situation.
“We have a great situation with our quarterbacks right now, with guys that have experience. We love where we’re at,” Canales told reporters on Wednesday. Veteran Andy Dalton will start for the Panthers, with Young serving as the backup. Rookie Jack Plummer is also on the practice squad.
Young, the 2023 No. 1 pick, has struggled in his NFL career so far. In 18 games, he has completed 59.3% of his pass attempts for 3,122 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. He has also been sacked 68 times.
Despite these early woes, Canales believes that Young has the potential to be a franchise quarterback. “This is a developmentally-minded program. The development didn’t stop,” Canales said. “Every rep he’s out there, we’re evaluating the whole thing, having conversations, and just continuing to push all of our guys, including Bryce, to take that next step.”
Canales also praised Young’s performance with the scout team, saying he had a “fantastic” day. This suggests that Young is still a key part of the team’s plans, even if he’s not starting right now.
The Panthers are clearly committed to developing Young’s skills and helping him reach his full potential. With Dalton and Plummer also on the roster, the team has a solid quarterback situation.
Overall, it seems that the Panthers are taking a patient approach with Young’s development. Despite his early struggles, they believe he can be a franchise quarterback and are willing to put in the time and effort to help him get there.
