A disturbing incident involving Detroit Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell’s family has come to light. A classmate of Campbell’s daughter reposted the family’s home address on social media after the team’s January playoff loss.
According to police reports obtained by The Detroit News, the incident was one of several where people showed up uninvited at the Campbell’s Bloomfield Township home.
The family has since moved to another home purchased by a limited liability company. Campbell and his wife, Holly, listed their 7,800-square-foot Bloomfield Township house for sale this month at $4.5 million.
Campbell downplayed the incident, saying, “It’s just that people figured out where we lived when we lost… I’ve got a job to do. My primary job here is to coach this team and have them prepared every week.”
The team finished the 2023 regular season with a 12-5 record, good for first place in the NFC North Division. However, their playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers seemed to trigger the disturbing behavior.
Beginning New Year’s Eve, police were notified of calls being made to Campbell’s home, and three people had knocked on the door. All the visitors were reportedly service-related, but the Campbells were concerned.
An extra police patrol was requested, but things took a darker turn after the NFC Championship game loss. Campbell’s address and an expletive about the coach were posted on Snapchat and shared by his daughter’s classmate.
Late that night, people began showing up at the house, frightening Campbell’s daughter, who eventually left the residence. Lions security contacted Bloomfield Township police, informing them that the address had been posted online.
Vehicles and people showed up outside the residence but did not enter the property. An NFL security official contacted the police the next day about the classmate’s involvement on Snapchat.
Police then contacted security at the private school, and investigators spoke with the boy’s mother. She was aware of the situation and had already been contacted by Mrs. Campbell.
The classmate later admitted to investigators that he saw a post with the address on Snapchat, copied it, and posted his own story. He also drove to Campbell’s home with other classmates after the NFC Championship game.
They parked on the street, yelled toward the house, and then drove away. The incident has left the Campbell family shaken, and they have since moved to a new home.
The incident highlights the darker side of fandom and the consequences of social media. It’s a sobering reminder that coaches and players are human beings who deserve respect and privacy.
In the end, Campbell remains focused on his job, saying, “I’ve got to do my job, and that’s the sole focus.”
