The Miami Dolphins had the fastest passing game in the NFL last season, with Tua Tagovailoa averaging just 2.25 seconds per pass attempt.
However, with Skylar Thompson taking over as quarterback, the Seattle Seahawks aren’t expecting the same lightning-quick pace.
Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald notes that Thompson is willing to hold onto the ball a bit longer than Tagovailoa, which could change the dynamics of the Dolphins’ offense.
While Thompson’s sample size is limited, Macdonald believes he has the ability to extend plays and make things happen outside of the pocket.
In his limited action last week, Thompson averaged 2.40 seconds per pass attempt, which is still relatively quick but slower than Tagovailoa’s pace.
Thompson’s preseason numbers were similar, with an average of 2.44 seconds per pass attempt.
However, when Thompson last started a game in 2022, he averaged 2.92 seconds per throw and struggled with sacks.
Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel says Thompson is a “different man” now, and the Seahawks shouldn’t expect the same struggles.
Despite the change in quarterback, the Dolphins’ quick-strike offense is likely to remain a key part of their game plan, even with Thompson at the helm.
